Tlinket Culture
The Trinkets are the native people to Alaska, the decedents that are still in Alaska today are doing everything they can to keep their culture alive. The children are taught the language in school and they use their history as a tourist destination to keep the memory of their people alive. The totem poles are used to tell the stories of the people. The one man in particular that was photographed 3 times in this series had a huge impact on my experience in Alaska. Owen made my view if the culture a lot more clear and personal. He explained every detail on a totem pole that he had carved. (shown in picture 8) He told us stories of his experiences and what the culture was to him. I wanted to use this as a photo series after talking to Owen for almost an hour about the culture.
Mountains
The mountains of Alaska are something you can't miss when you go to Alaska even if you tried. The mountains are something that makes Alaska so beautiful and I knew i would have to photograph their beauty to capture the beauty of Alaska. I love this series because it reminds me of Ansel Adams, a photographer who's photos have been up in my house since I was a kid.
